BSNL will introduce by December end
this year Broadband services at 198 cities in India, including 18 in Andhra
Pradesh.
BSNL will roll out Broadband services in various parts of the state in the first
phase with an outlay of Rs 20.59 crore, BSNL AP Circle Chief General Manager
Sanjay Kumar Gupta told newspersons here today.
Initially it would be targetting the internet customer, providing them highspeed
download access of minimum 256 kbps before rolling out video, voice and image
text in the second phase.
In the first year it plans to provide 14,251 connections by March 31, 2005,
though orders had been placed for procuring equipment for about 2.42 lakh connections,
while providing long migration from dial-up to broadband.
BSNL was in the process of commissioning of a world class, multi-gigabit, multi-protocol,
convergent IP infrastructure through National Internet Backbone-II, that will
provide convergent services through the same backbone and broadband access network,
Gupta said.The Broadband service will be available on DSL technology--on
the same copper cable that is used for connecting telephone--on a countrywide
basis spanning 198 cities.
It also planned to provide multicasting video on demand, video conferencing
and virtual private network (VPN) facility to retail users, corporates, cooperatives,
government bodies and ISPS.
