BSNL plans to offer its broadband services to
its existing DIAS customers, according to chief general manager of BSNL, Kolkata, SP Chakraborty. The broadband tariff of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL)
will be less than the Direct Internet Access Service (DIAS) rate which gives
an internet speed of 128 Kbps.
BSNL, the country’s largest telecom service provider, will launch its
broadband service in the month of December. It plans to have a million
broadband customers by the end of December 2005. At the customers-end, the
internet speed will be 256 Kbps.
Mr Chakraborty, who was present at ‘The Third CEO Conclave’ organised by
Voice & Data, told reporters that BSNL’s broadband would have a bouquet of
services, which will include internet, video-on-demand and satellite
television.
“At the time of launch, BSNL will offer internet service through a single
copper wire, which only provides fixed line service till now. Later, we will
start providing video-on-demand and satellite channels,” said Mr Chakraborty.
The launch will cover all the major towns as well as district headquarters.
BSNL’s existing DIAS has four tariff structures like Plan-0, I, II and III.
BSNL officials present at the meet said they believed that the broadband
rate would be less than plan I which is Rs 850 per month with a free usage
of 0.6 GB and additional charge of Rs 100 per MB.
“The broadband customers have to deposit an amount as we will install a box
and an ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) modem at the customers’
place. The customer has to have a PC with a LAN card to avail himself of the
broadband service,” said the BSNL official.
For BSNL, ADSL will be the high-speed telecom technology to carry broadband
signals using the last mile copper wire.
The box at the customer’s end will split the BSNL connection into two parts.
One will connect to the fixed line telephone set and the other will go into
the PC through the ADSL modem, the official said.
