| Reliance Infocom signed an agreement with West
Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corp (WeBEL) today. The deal means
they will be providing broadband services to the household customers in
Bengal.
Webel Managing Director Dr S K Mitra signed the MoU along with Reliance
Industries R Tewari. Webel will enable faster processing of necessary
permissions and clearances to facilitate rapid and cost-effective rollout of
services.
State IT Minister Manab Mukherjee told the media: “In the first phase,
Reliance will provide telephony and high speed internet services while video
or entertainment services will be offered in the second phase”. The services
would be distributed through cable operators some of whom are already
operate with other ISPs.
West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation already provides
net services to the people of Bengal through their brand name, Webel ISP and
now Reliance will add additional bandwidth. This agreement is for a period
of six months, however, the companies have not disclosed the rates and
product plans as yet.
Webel is eyeing a 25 per cent share of the estimated Rs 1,000-crore market
in the first year of operations. |
