Ireland Slips Behind With Broadband
|
A new report, published by Ireland's economic development
agency, Forfás, compares Ireland's competitiveness
in providing broadband services with those of 21 other countries.
The agency says that the lack of competing broadband technologies, such as cable,
and little competition and innovation in the DSL market are to blame for Ireland
slipping in the broadband competitiveness rankings.
The report is an update of progress in this area over the past year. Chief executive
Martin Cronin said that "although there has been considerable growth in DSL
services and coverage, along with big price reductions, the rollout of broadband
continues to be an issue."
The report estimates that compared with the average across countries surveyed,
there is currently a broadband deficit in Ireland of up to 360,000 connections,"
said Mr Cronin.
The report makes a number of recommendations to improve Ireland's broadband
competitiveness, including greater cross-platform competition, reducing structural
build charges, better use of broadband spectrums, and more effective use of
State-owned networks.
