| Internet service provider, BigAir, is offering
10Mbps broadband service to some of its residential customers.
The ISP, which specialises in providing internet access for residents of
low-rise apartments and tower blocks, claimed that the new offering was the
fastest available in Australia.
However, the 10Mbps service costs over 16 times as much as most basic ADSL
services, priced at $500 per month with downloads capped at 100GB.
BigAir, joint managing director, Jason Ashton conceded that the service was
expensive but said that it was targeted at "power users" prepared to pay for
business-grade applications.

Many ISPs now offer a basic 256Kbps ADSL broadband service with a 500MB
download allowance for around $30 per month. BigAir began offering a 1Mbps
ADSL service with a 500MB download allowance at an equivalent price last
September.
At the time, Ashton said he did not believe that internet access speeds
between 256Kbps and 512Kbps could deliver true broadband experience.
BigAir's service is only available to a limited number of high-rise
buildings in inner Sydney at present, but the company said it was in the
process of expanding its footprint across the city.
Ashton said that Bigthe service was currently installed in around 75
buildings containing between 70 to 300 apartments. The ISP wireless foot
print currently extends from Sydney CBD south to Hurstville, and to parts of
Sydney's north.
However, it appears likely that the company will only roll out the service
in buildings that have expressed an interest in its service.
"High-rise residents and body corporates who want access to super-fast
broadband should contact us to register their interest," Mr Ashton said.
