An Australian company that specialises in
supplying broadband to the hospitality industry has signed a deal to provide
Internet access and video-on-demand to 1000 Rydges hotel rooms in New
Zealand.
The Rydges group has six New Zealand hotels, says Kelly Sides, chief
operating officer of Entertainment and Media Telecoms (EMT).
"We intend to get fairly aggressive in New Zealand after the start of the
new year," he says.
EMT provides both broadband connections to hotel rooms and a digital
video-on-demand service. Mr Sides says video-on-demand offers about 100
channels of "typical hotel entertainment content".
EMT is also talking to other hotel chains in New Zealand. "We're targeting
the four-to-five star market and even some of the three stars."
Cabling work has already begun and EMT is in the process of picking its
bandwidth providers in New Zealand, Mr Sides says.
The deal with Rydges is part of a deal which also covers hotels in Australia
and Singapore.
Mr Sides says the international market for providing broadband to hotel
rooms is growing at about 25 per cent a year. "A lot of people are using it
as a leisure product to surf the Internet and download pictures."
EMT also offers a wireless keyboard for surfing the Internet using the
room's TV.
