Broadband Glossary A - C

ADSL
ADSL stands for "Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line". This is the technology that has been developed to enable broadband connections using the existing telephone network.

Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred over a connection at any one time. For a standard connection through a telephone line, the bandwidth can be up to 56Kbps maximum. When using a broadband connection it can be up to 10 times this at 512Kbps.
Broadband
A connection to the Internet that works at high speeds because it is enabled to cope with a much higher bandwidth than a 'normal' telephone line.
Cable
Cable is the generic name given to those services which use a fiber-optic cable which is buried underground, to carry telephone, television and broadband to your home or business.
Contention ratio
Contention ratio refers to the sharing of your bandwidth between a number of other users.
