| ADSL |
|
ADSL stands for "Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line". This is the technology that has been developed to
enable broadband connections using the existing telephone network. |

| Bandwidth |
| The amount of data that can be transferred over
a connection at any one time. For a standard connection through a telephone
line, the bandwidth can be up to 56Kbps
maximum. When using a broadband connection it can be up to 10 times this at
512Kbps. |

| Broadband |
| A connection to the Internet that works at high
speeds because it is enabled to cope with a much higher bandwidth than
a 'normal' telephone line. |

| Cable |
|
Cable is the generic name
given to those services which use a fiber-optic
cable which is buried underground,
to carry telephone, television and broadband to your home or business. |

| Contention ratio |
|
Contention ratio
refers to the sharing of your bandwidth between a number of other users.
