'Always On' - Should I be Concerned?
'Always on' -
Should I be concerned about this?
| In a word, 'No'. |
| Many users who currently have a dial-up connection
but wish to switch to broadband, are concerned about the 'always-on' aspect.
The phrase, 'always-on' can make potential broadband users nervous about signing
up to a broadband supplier.
| This is because 'always-on' suggests, wrongly,
that the user's computer is a constant target for hackers, 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, because it is always connected to the internet.
This is incorrect. (see Broadband Myth
Busting)
| With broadband, you can of course, leave your computer
connected to the broadband network so that you are only ever one click away
from the internet. There is no time limit on how long you can connect for.
This means you can keep your internet connection in the background while
you do other things; for example, photo editing while listening to broadband
radio.
| This is why you are 'always on'; because you can
keep your connection to the internet for as long as you like, running in the
background. |
| Once you are finished and you decide to close your
connection, your computer is disconnected from the internet. |
