With ever more sophisticated viruses and combined threats, antivirus software is an essential addition to every user's computer. Equally essential, is keeping the software up to date. This can be as often as daily updating if necessary, certainly checking for updates several times a week is a must.
This is because automatic updating of antivirus software began to be exploited recently by virus writers who realised that automatic updating was usually only occurring once a week. They then waited for an automatic update to occur, then released a new virus the following day, giving the virus five to six days to spread to vulnerable machines.
With dial-up, updating antivirus definitions regularly can be a real chore, taking on average, around 15 - 20 minutes each time there is an update. This can lead to irregular updating and poor computer security.
